A Variety of Savory Souvenirs from the Minang Realm

Minangkabau culinary such as Karupuak Sanjai, Sala Lauak, Karupuak Jangek and others are a typical part of savory Minang confectionery. They are made from local raw materials such as cassava, glutinous rice flour, rice flour, coconut, and cane sugar.

This traditional snack is widely hunted to be used as souvenirs when visiting the cities of Padang, Bukittinggi, Solok and others in West Sumatra.

Here are some typical Minang snacks that are often used as souvenirs:

Karupuak Sanjai

Here are the souvenirs typical of the city of Bukittinggi. Karupuak sanjai is made from cassava which is sliced long and then fried in hot oil and then covered with chili sauce. Nowadays, there are many souvenir shops that sell sanjai karupuak.

Karupuak Jangek

Karupuak jangek aka leather crackers are crackers made from cowhide or buffalo skin. This typical Minang souvenir must go through various processing processes before it can finally be eaten, starting from boiling the skin which is then heated on a fire with the aim that the feathers disappear to drying in the hot sun for approximately 2-3 days. Karupuak jangek is delicious to be eaten together with satay soup or eaten with chopped goulash soup.

Sala Lauak

This small round snack is made by frying it dry. In Indonesian, sala lauak is fish sala. Sala lauak is a souvenir originating from Pariaman. Usually, snacks made from rice flour are sold in places that sell lontong sayur. The savory rice cake soup mixed with the slightly salty skin of the rice cake makes lontong sayur taste delicious when eaten.

Beef Cake

This cake is indeed similar to a semprong cake, only the shape is different. If the weaver cake is folded, then the semprong cake is rolled. When lifted from the baking mold, the beak cake is directly clamped and then folded. Beef cake made from rice flour, sugar, coconut milk, eggs, and cinnamon powder.

Bilih Side Dish

Lauk (fish) bilih is a typical Minang souvenir originating from Solok. Because, this unique fish only exists in Lake Singkarak. Bilih fish is usually sold with various types of preparations. Some are ripe, some are still raw. Cooked bilih fish is fried and only seasoned with salt. Cooked bilih fish can last up to a week. In fact, this fish can last up to a month if stored in the refrigerator.

However, if you have limited time, don’t worry, now in Padang City even at Minangkabau International Airport there are already several shops that sell these savory souvenirs.
